Expert Tips for Lubrication and Maintenance of CAT Excavator I-Beam Connecting Rods

Proper lubrication is critical to minimizing wear on I-beam and connecting rod components and preventing rust. Follow this core principle for specialized lubrication maintenance: select the right grease, adhere to standard procedures, and replace grease promptly. Below are the detailed requirements:

1.Grease Selection Guidelines

Always use grease approved by CAT's original equipment manufacturer (OEM) - such as CAT DEO Special Grease or an equivalent extreme-pressure lithium-based grease. Never mix greases of different brands or grades, as this can trigger chemical reactions that lead to lubrication failure. For low-temperature operating environments (below -10°C), opt for specialized grease with excellent low-temperature fluidity. For high-temperature conditions, choose high-temperature-resistant lubricating grease instead.

2.Lubrication Operation Steps

Prior to lubrication, wipe away dust and oil stains around the grease fitting to prevent contaminants from entering the lubrication system. Use a high-pressure grease gun to inject grease at a steady pace until fresh grease oozes out of the grease discharge hole or component clearances. Ensure all old grease is fully expelled; mixing new and old grease will compromise lubrication performance. After greasing, clean the fitting again and reinstall the dust cap to keep impurities out.

3.Lubrication Interval Controls

Under normal operating conditions, replenish grease at all I-beam and connecting rod lubrication points every 25 working hours. In harsh environments - characterized by heavy dust, high loads, or extreme temperatures - shorten the interval to 10–15 hours. Every 200 working hours (or as specified in your equipment's maintenance manual), fully disassemble and clean key lubrication components like bushings and pivot pins, then refill them with fresh grease.

4.Troubleshooting for Special Cases

If a grease fitting becomes clogged, replace it immediately - never attempt to force grease through a blocked fitting. Should leaks occur at any lubrication point, inspect seals (including oil seals and O-rings) for damage. Replace worn or defective seals first, then resume the lubrication process.
